The Philosophy of Prananda
‘Prananda’ comes from two Sanskrit words vital to the practice of yoga, ‘life force’ and ‘bliss’. ‘Prana’ is the energy or life force the body needs and receives from correct deep yoga breathing. ‘Ananda’ means pure joy or bliss, which one can build from breathing in that life force and moving energy through the body via asanas (postures).
Prananda yoga classes are based on the tradition of Classical Yoga and Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga. All classes begin with an opening Sanskrit chant and breath work. The asana practice is linked with breath awareness, and the knowledge of anatomy and physiology to assist with proper alignment to prevent injuries. Each class concludes with a brief meditation, a closing chant and relaxation.
Yoga is about moving the body, mind and spirit in such a way that all three function better for a more enhanced life. The body benefits from the postures themselves by increasing strength and flexibility. The mind benefits from the meditation, letting go of the stressful and distracting thoughts of your daily life. The spirit benefits because the breath allows us to breathe in that life force all around us that we need to thrive and glow as human beings. The breath connects the ethereal with the physical.
Yoga really isn’t about sticking your foot in your ear. Yoga starts where you are right now; getting back to the basics- breathing, clearing your mind of the clutter, de-stressing and strengthening. Who couldn’t use any of that? If you are reading this you are breathing, you’re alive, you’re functioning. Yoga just makes life a little juicier and connects you to the sacred within, that you already possess.
The History of Prananda
On February 1, 2003 Prananda was born. The dream of Joy Wolfe, owner and founder of Prananda, was to teach yoga that encompasses all body types and ages.
Joy invites any body type to explore their yoga practice in a safe environment with the comfort of an accomplished yoga instructor. She believes in giving back to the community. Joy purposely keeps affordable prices and traditionally on Thanksgiving donates the proceeds from the class to a charity. Prananda Yoga School has certified over thirty five yoga instructors. Over the years, Prananda instructors have offered yoga classes to the full spectrum of society: for the financially challenged, children, gentle yoga classes for larger body types, prenatal, chair yoga for the elderly, and special needs yoga. Prananda instructors are dedicated to serving the community, environment and in turn the world, to make it a better place. Please join us.
Joy Wolfe (B.F.A.-The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art; Registered Yoga Teacher) is a certified yoga instructor through IAYT (international Association of Yoga Therapists and the founder of PRANANDA. She has conducted workshops and on-going classes in New York, California, Oregon and Florida. Joy has also taught anatomy, physiology and massage at the Massage School of Santa Monica. She has been a yoga practitioner since 1991 and has been trained by honored and respected teachers such as Alan Finger, Ana Forrest, Julie Gudmedstad, Kino McGregor, Erich Schiffman and Rod Stryker.
